China, South Korea in same group in Asian Junior meet

Defending champions China and runners-up South Korea have been drawn in Group A for this year's mixed team event in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships to be held in Bangkok next month.

China, the top seeds and hot favourites to retain the title, were champs the last three years, defeating Korea in the final each time. The other teams in the group are Singapore (10th seeds) and Kazakhstan (No 15). The Koreans are seeded only No 8 this year. 

Hosts and No 2 seeds Thailand are drawn in Group D together with fifth seeds India and Philippines (seeded No 11) and Vietnam (No 13).

Group B is made up of fourth seeds Japan, Hong Kong (No 7), Macau and Sri Lanka, seeded No 12 and No 16 respectively.

Indonesia, who have confidently predicted a place in the final are in Group C - the only group that has five teams - with sixth seeds Malaysia, Taiwan (No 9) and minnows Mongolia (No 14) and Myanmar (No 17).

The team seedings is based on overall team strength of BWF Junior World Ranking as of June 23 2016.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout stage with Group A champions meeting Group C runners-up. Group B champions will take on Group D runners-up for a place in the semi-finals.

Group A runners-up will face Group C champions while Group D champions will take on the runners-up of Group B.

The mixed team event will be held from July 9-12. The individual events will be held from July 13-17. All matches will be played at the CPB Badminton and Sports Training Center in Bangkok.
