Asian players stage upsets in mixed doubles
SYDNEY: China's unseeded mixed doubles pairs of Liu Yuchen-Tang Jianhua and Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen upstaged their more illustrious rivals here Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open Superseries.
Liu Yuchen-Tang Jinhua stunned second seeds, Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christina Pedersen from Denmark 21-18, 21-16. Later in the day, Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen sent fifthseeds Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock packing with a 21-16, 21-18 win.
Liu Yuchen-Tang Jinhua will face Malaysia's seventh seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying while Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen will battle Japanese duo of Kenta Kazuno-Ayane Kurihara tomorrow.
There was a huge upset in the men's doubles when Indonesia's top ranked pair, Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan crashed out to Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong. The Malaysians won 17-21, 21-17, 21-19.
Second seeds, Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan meanwhile faced little problems moving on when they swept past Malaysians Mohd Azriyn-Jagdish Singh 21-14, 21-7.
In the men's singles, topseed Chen Long, whose lost the world No.1 ranking to Lee Chong Wei today, advanced with a smashing 21-17, 21-12 win over Zulfadli Zulkifli of Malaysia.
Rising young Indonesian singles shuttler, Anthony Ginting, defeated Sameer Verma to make the quarterfinals. Anthony is among several young exciting talents from Indonesia who have emerged of late. Jonatan Christie and Ihsan Maulana are the others who have made the semfinals of the Malaysian and Indonesian Superseries.
Another interesting result today was the victory of qualifer Heo KWang Hee. The South Korean defeated Wang Zhengming of China who retired at 11-2 in the decider. The final result was 29-30, 21-12, 11-2.
Newly crowned Indonesian Open champ, Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei, who is seeded eighth here, made it through when she beat Malaysian Tee Jing Yee 21-10, 21-19.
Thailand's second seeded Ratchanok Inthaon also stayed on track with a 21-7, 21-9 victory over Yip Pui Yin from Hongkong.
