Chong Wei to regain world No.1 spot, Yong Dae-Yeong Seong are champs
JAKARTA: There were several moments when it looked like Jan O Jorgensen would walk away as the winner of the Indonesian Open. But a determined Lee Chong Wei served a lesson to all that it's never really over until the final point is played.
Chong Wei overcame a smashing performance from his opponent to bag the Indonesian Open title a sixth time. Although a defeat was enough to return the No.1 world ranking to the Malaysian, he clearly wanted do it in style. The official BWF rankings will be out later this week.
After losing the opener 17-21, Chong Wei, who last won in Indonesia in 2013, managed to scrape through the second to win 21-19. He was in fact trailing at 17-19 but romped back to clinch the second.
Jorgensen was pushing hard all the way but at 14-all, Chong Wei dug deep and pulled out an amazing run that concluded at 21-17.
"I'm very happy to win the Indonesia Open for the sixth time.
Today, Jorgensen played very well. I just tried to focus. In the beginning, I didn't play so well. In the second game he was leading 19-17, I was preparing myself to lose. I just wanted to try for each point.
"Jorgensen played much played better today compared to previous matches. I beat him in Malaysia, but he played a better game today. Now I will go to Australia and hope to continue my performance.
I hope I can come next year to Indonesia and retain my title," said Chong Wei, whose head-to-head count now stands at 16-1.
A disappointed Jorgensen told the media later. "I tried my best, of course I'm disappointed but I gave him a good fight. I had been struggling all week, so I'm quite surprised that I reached this level today."
"It's tough playing Lee Chong Wei, so you can't afford to make mistakes," said the fifth seeded Jorgensen, referring to the errors he made towards the end of the deciding tie that resulted in Chong Wei pulling away. "Today's game has certainly given me the confidence of playing at this level."
Jorgensen also finished second last year under similar circumstances when he went down the Japan's Kento Momota.
In the men's doubles, top ranked pair, Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong recovered from an early setback to snatch the Indonesian title which they last won in 2014.
Fifth seeded Chai Biao-Hong Wei of China stunned the topseeds 13-21 but the Koreans, who are hugely popular in Jakarta, levelled the game with a similar score. It was a hard-fought decider but the Koreans, who were semifinalists here last year, eventually prevailed 21-16.
