India's Sindhu gets elected to BWF Athletes' Commission
Rio Olympics silver medal winner P.V. Sindhu has become the second Indian shuttler to get elected to the BWF Athletes' Commission - joining compatriot and London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal.
The 22-year-old Sindhu, ranked No 4, polled 129 votes to top the list as one of the members of the commission. Voting took place last Wednesday on the sidelines of the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships which ended in Gold Coast on Sunday.
Also elected were Germany's Marc Zwiebler and Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour who polled 108 and 103 votes respectively.
The three will serve a four-year term. They replace Belgium's Yuhan Tan, Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Indonesia's Greysia Polii - who have concluded their four-year terms.
It is a big boost for Indian badminton. India already have London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal on the players' representative body.
Nehwal is a former world No 1. She skipped the Sudirman Cup to be with her father who is recovering after undergoing prostate gland surgery.
Meanwhile, Sindhu, who led India to the quarter-finals in the Sudirman Cup will not feature in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold which begins on Tuesday. Nehwal, however, will compete in the Thai meet in her bid to win her second title this year after winning the Malaysia Masters in Sibu, Sarawak earlier this year.
