Ihsan pulls through as Jonatan drops out

JAKARTA: Ihsan Maulana Mustofa charged into the semifinals but his conmpatriot Jonatan Christie dropped out of contention in the quarterfinals of the Indonesian Open today.

Ihsan defeated England's Rajiv Ouseph but the exciting Jonatan fell just short of staging a major upset against Jan O Jorgensen, the fifth seed.

The 21-year-old Ihsan dropped the first game but rebounded to claim the next two. He eventually won 17-21, 21-12, 21-14.

But it was a dissapointment for Jonatna who actually had fifth seede Jan O Jorgensen up against the wall. The home boy bagged the first at 21-14 in just 18 minutes. The fans were on a high and confident Jonathan would pull it off.

But a string of mistakes, probably brought about by the need to finish off the Dane quickly, saw Jonatan lose the second game.

After drawing level at 11-all and again at 16-all, Jorgensen snatched the crucial lead when Jonatan's shot hit the tape. Still, the world no. 19 managed to haul himself back and square the score at 18-18.

But a few mistakes saw Jorgensen win the second 21-19 in 14 minutes.

Jorgensen had a great start i the decider and was 10-3 up. Jonatan tried to get back in to the game but despite the thunderous support from the home fans, the experienced Jorgensen kept his cool and claimed victory.

In an all Korean showdown, topseeds Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yoon Seong lived up to their No.1 billing when they swept aside teammates Ko Sung Hyun-Shin Baek Cheol (Kor) 21-12, 21-16.

The women's singles had the Chinese duo of Wang Yihan and Wang Shixian sailing through along with topseed Carolina Marin of Spain.
