Saina Nehwal pulls out of Sudirman Cup

India will be without their former World No 1 Saina Nehwal for their campaign in the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships n Gold Coast, Australia from May 21-28.

The 27-year-pd Nehwal, who won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, is staying back to be with her father Harvir Singh who recently underwent surgery in Hyderabad for prostate gland enlargement.

In the absence of the world No 9, India will now bank on P.V. Sindhu and Rio Olympics silver medalist P.V. Sindhu, currently ranked No 5 in the world. 

India finished ninth in the last edition of the Sudirman Cup and face a tough a draw in Gold Coast - drawn in Group 1D together with Thomas Cup champions Denmark and Indonesia.

Denmark are the second seeds in this year's Sudirman Cup while 10-time champions and hot favourites China are the top seeds. China are drawn in Group 1A and have Thailand and Hong Kong for company.
