A repeat of the Rio Olympics women's singles final is on the cards after top seed Carolina Marin of Spain and third seed P.V. Sindhu of India won their quarter-final matches in the USD325,000 Yonext Sunrise India Open Super Series on Friday.

Olympic champion Marin won a three-set battle against Japan's Minatsu Mitani 21-10, 20-22, 21-14 in 56 minutes. The Spaniard will face another Japanese Akane Yamaguchi when the fourth seed defeated compatriot Nozomi Okuhara also in three sets 21-13, 11-21, 21-18.

Sindhu defeated compatriot and sixth seed Saina Nehwal 21-16, 22-20 in a much awaited clash at the Sri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. It was the first time the two Indians were playing each in a super series event. Nehwal, who underwent knee surgery for an injury she sustained while playing in the Rio Olympics won the Malaysia Masters earlier this year but is not fully recovered yet.

The lanky Sindhu faces a tough hurdle in second seed Sung Ji-jyun in the semi-final. The in-form Korean knocked out defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in straight sets 21-16, 22-20 in a 49-minute encounter.

Sindhu is India's only hope remaining after national champion and winner of the recent Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold suffered a shock exit at the hands of Denmark's Anders Antonsen. The Dane won 24-22, 21-19.

Malaysia's top seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were also dumped out of the tournament in the men's doubles after a 15-21, 17-21 defeat at the hands of fifth seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen of China.

World No 1 and recently crowned All-England champions Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia also advanced to the last four after a hard fought 21-18, 22-20 win over Russians Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov. In the mixed doubles Rio Olympics silver medallists Can Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying kept Malaysia's hopes alive in the mixed doubles when they marched into the semi-finals with a 22-20, 19-21, 21-15  win over Korea's Kim Gi-jung-Shin Seung-chan after a one hour battle.
