Sindhu's night of glory as she gains revenge over Olympic champion Marin
It was a night of glory for Indian badminton - a night when India's rising badminton star P.V. Sindhu made it count and celebrated in style with victory and revenge over Olympic champion Carolina Marin to win the women's singles title in the USD325,000 Yonex Sunrise India Open.
Her 21-19, 21-16 win over Marin in 47 minutes was sweet revenge for her defeat to the Spaniard in last year's Rio Olympics final.
Sindhu, described her victory as very sweet but said "there were no easy points" in her straight sets triumph in the dream final in front of her home fans. The Sri Fort Indoor Stadium was packed to the brim to witness the much awaited match since the Indian's painful defeat in Rio.
Marin said: "She (Sindhu) played better to win the title."
It has been a bad start to the season for Marin who, except for he Olympic gold, did not win any superseries title last year.
The men's singles title went to Denmark's Olympics bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen - registering a 21-13, 21-10 win over Taiwan's seventh seeded Chou Tien Chen in 36 minutes. It was third time lucky for the third seeded Dane who was beaten in the final in 2015 and 2016.
"I am just happy to win my second superseries title and it means a lot to me," said Axelsen.
In the all-Indonesia men's doubles final All-England champions Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo outplayed compatriots Ricky Karanda Suwardi-Angga Pratama 21-11, 21-15 win in only 29 minutes with the champions riding on their speed and sharpness.
All-England champions and second seeds Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong upset top seeds Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen in an all-China mixed doubles final.
Japan's Shiho Tanaka-Koharu Yonemoto celebrated their first superseries title in their first final with a hard fought 22-24, 21-14, 21-17 win over compatriots Naoko Fukuman-Kurimi Yanao in 72 minutes.
