THE BEST OF ASIA: PAI YU-PO (CHINESE TAIPEI)
Pai Yu-po is a Taiwanese badminton player and currently ranked #42 in BWF’s World Ranking. With over 186 career wins so far, she is one of ‘The Best of Asia’s’ players!
Born in Taipei, she started playing badminton at the young age of 9 when her mother took her and her sister to play badminton. From then on, she fell in love with the sport and became a professional not long after. She made her professional debut in 2007 at the Vietnam International and has since been playing for more than 13 years!
Throughout her career she has played in many tournaments all over the world. In 2008 she participated in the Macau Grand Prix Gold, and the year after she qualified for the Osaka International. But it was in 2010, when she won one of her very first medals at the Kaohsiung International, where she beat her compatriot Chiang Pei-hsin 21-19, 21-17 to clinch the gold medal. From 2011-2012, she went on to compete in the Australian Open, Chinese Taipei Open, Italian International and more.
In 2013 she found herself on the podium once more as she took home the silver medals at 2 international competitions; the Polish International and the Malaysia International. At the Malaysia International she was defeated by Chinese Taipei player Hsu Ya-ching. At the Polish International, she competed in the mixed doubles category with her partner Lu Ching-yao but lost to their compatriots Lin Chia-hsuan and Hsu Ya-ching 21-12, 16-21, 18-21. It was a very close match and an amazing feat for the pair.
Her success didn’t stop there as she continued to win medals the following year. In 2014,, she got 2 silver medals at the Canada and Dutch Open. 2014 was also an incredibly important year for her as she lined the Chinese Taipei national team and represented her country at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games! In 2015, she won silver again at the USA International and also won gold at the U.S. Grand Prix after defeating Kirsty Gilmour 18-21, 21-15, 21-15.
Despite playing for more than 10 years, she hasn't slowed down. In 2017 she won silver at the Macau Open and in 2019 gold at the Russian Open. An amazing career spanning over a whole decade! We congratulate Pai Yu-po and wish her more success.
