Women top seeds breeze through to quarter-finals in Yonex Sunrise India Open
Two of India's best known women shuttlers - Olympic medal winners P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal - will battle for a place in the semi-finals in the Yonex Sunrise India Open Super Series on Friday.
Third seed and world No 5 Sindhu, who won the silver medal at last year's Rio Olympics will face London Olympics bronze medallist Nehwal after the two won their respective second round matches at the Sri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi on Thursday.
Sindhu advanced with a 21-16, 23-21 win over Japan's Saena Kawakami in a 40-minute match while Nehwal, the 2015 champion, checked in with a 21-14, 21-12 win over Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong whom she beat in the Malaysia Masters final earlier this year.
Second seeded Sung Ji-hyun of Korea needed only 23 minutes for a 21-6, 21-18 win over Bulgaria's Linda Zetchri and takes on defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the last eight. Ratchanok shut out China's Zhang Yiman 21-14, 21-19.
Top seed Carolina Marin of Spain is also through to the quarter-finals. The Olympic champion beat India's Ritupama Das 21-13, 21-11 and takes on Japan's Minatsu Mitani next.
Meanwhile in the men's singles 2015 champion K. Srikanth was blown away by Rio Olympics bronze medal winner Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the second round.
The third seeded Dane won 21-7, 21-12 and will face Taiwan's Wang Tzu Wei who bundled out fifth seed and China's hope Tian Houwei 21-14, 21-12.
Sameer Verma kept India's hopes alive when he marched into the last eight with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Hong Kong's Hu Yun. The Indian national champion will meet Denmark's Anders Antonsen for a place in the last four.
In the men's doubles top seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia eased into the quarter-finals with a 21-10, 21-17 win over the scratch combination of the Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) and Tan Boon Heong (Malaysia).
Newly crowned All-England champions and current world No 1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia defeated Japan's Takuto Inouei-Yuki Kaneko 21-16, 21-18.
Taiwan's Lee Jhe-huei-Lee Yang outplayed third seeds and Europe's hope Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark 21-18, 21-18. It was double blow for Denmark when Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were beaten by China's Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen of Chen in the second round.
