Young Jonatan, doubles aces Ahsan-Hendra lead Indonesian charge into next round
JAKARTA: Rising Indonesian singles star, Jonatan Christie along with doubles aces Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan led the local charge into the second round of the BCA Indonesian Open here Wednesday.
Jonatan, surprise semifinalist at the Malaysia Open Superseries Premier, powered past Chinese Taipei's Hsu Jen Hao 21-12, 21-19 in his first round tie today.
The 19-yearold Jonatan will face third seeded Lin Dan, who won a tough game against Malaysia's Zulfadli Zulkifli, in the next round.
Sony Dwo Kuncoro also moved on after topseed and world No.1 Chen Long conceded a walkover. Malaysian Lee Chong Wei advanced after beating Indian Sameer Verma 21-11, 21-13.
Viktor Axelsen, fresh from his team's success at the recent Thomas Cup, retired in the deciding tie against China's Huang Yuxiang. Huang won 16-21, 21-16, 8-4 retired.
In the men's doubles, Ahsan-Hendra, the second seeds here, eased past Hongkong's Or Chin Chung-Tang Chun Man with a 23-21, 25-23 victory.
Ahsan-Hendra led a bunch of their compatriots into the next round. Among the pairs that made it through today were Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya, Akbar Bintang Cahyono-Anggar Sudrajat
