One assessor and two candidates from China were forced to withdraw from the Badminton Asia Umpires Mentoring Course in Manila because of travel restrictions imposed by their country following the outbreak of coronavirus.

However, for others - one each from Iraq, Nepal, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei, and two from host nation the Philippines - it is a battle to move up the ladder and become Badminton World Federation (BWF) Accredited from their present credentials as Badminton Asia Certificated Umpires.

The mentoring course is held in conjunction with the on-going Badminton  Asia Manila Team Championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila which also serves as the Asian qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark in May.

In the absence of assessor Ms. Zheng  Sanliang of China, India's Mr. Sudhakar Vedmuri is a one-man show in Manila, assessing the umpires for ''promotion'' to BWF level.
