Chen Long versus Jorgensen final in Thaihot China Open
Three-time champion Chen Long will face Denmark's Jan O Jorgensen in the men's singles final on Sunday in the USD700,000 Thaihot China Open Superseries Premier in Fuzhou.
In the semi-finals played on Saturday the Chinese ace, winner of the Rio Olympics gold medal beat Olympics bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen in a three-set thriller with the second seeded Chen Long prevailing 21-18, 9-21, 21-14 over the third seeded Dane in 69 minutes.
Fourth seed Jorgensen ended Malaysia's Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin's march into the last four in another thriller with the Dane booking his place in the final with a 22-20, 20-22, 21-7 victory in a closely fought match.
It was the Malaysian's first ever semi-final in a superseries tournament. Iskandar is the second ranked player in Malaysia after world No 1 Lee Chong Wei who pulled out from the China Open because of injury.
India's P.V. Sindhu is also having great tournament in Fuzhou as the Olympics bronze medal winner showed nerves of steel to score a come from behind 11-21, 23-21, 21-19 win over Korea's Sung Ji-hyun in a marathon 84-minute match.
Her opponent in the final is China's hope and No 8 seed Sun Yu. Sun Yu showed giant killer Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan the exit in the semi-finals with a 21-8, 23-21 win. Tzu Ying defeated Olympic and world champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the quarter-finals. The Taiwanese won 21-10, 22-20 over the top seeded Marin.
Indonesia's Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo pulled off a major upset in the men's doubles when the seventh seeds stunned top seeds Chai Biao-Hong Wei 16-21, 26-24 in 64 minutes.
In the other semi-finals No 4 seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmarj dealt China another blow with a 23-21, 21-17 win over Liu Cheng-Zhang Nan to reach the final.
China's Huang Dongping-Li Yunhui hammered Denmark's third seeds Kamilla Rhytter Juhl-Christina Pedersen 21-16, 21-18 in the women's doubles. The Chinese pair will face sixth seeded Koreans Chang Ye-na-Lee So-hee who upset fourth seeds - Luo twins - Luo Ying-Luo Yu 21-14, 24-22 in an hour-long match.
Mixed doubles also saw a major upset with world No 1 and top seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Kim Ha-na going out of the tournament after a shock 21-19, 10-21, 21-15 defeat at the hands of China's new pair Zhang Nan-Li Yunhui.
The Chinese will take on Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia in the final. The Indonesian second seeds edged Korea's Choi Solgyu-Chae Yoo-jang 21-17, 25-23.
