Goh Jin Wei surrenders her world junior crown in Bilbao
In a bizarre turn of events Malaysia's reigning women's singles junior world champion Goh Jin Wei surrendered her crown in the Junior World Championships in Bilbao, Spain on Thursday.
Jin Wei was Malaysia's best hope of winning an individual title after helping Malaysia take the silver medal in the mixed team event. China retained the title with a 3-0 win over Malaysia in the final.
A twisted ankle and a pulled hamstring in the second set and not wanting to seek medical treatment put paid to the 16-year-old Jin Wei's hope of retaining the title she won in Lima, Peru last year.
"I thought I could do it. I tried to bear the pain because I didn't want to retire. I tried but it didn't go well," Jin Wwi was quoted by the BWF website.
What hurts more was that the Malaysian was cruising into the quarter-finals after winning the first set 21-10 against Japan's Natsuki Oie and was 12-7 up in the second before disaster struck in the fifth round match.
With the Malaysian injured the Japanese lass grabbed the opportunity to win the next two sets 21-16, 21-16 in 58 minutes and a place in the quarter-finals against China's No 9 seed Gao Fangjie who packed off No 7 Gregoria Mariska of Indonesia 21-8, 21-14.
China's second seed Chen Yufei is also through to the quarter-finals with a 21-13, 21-10 win over India's Shikha Gautam in 26 minutes. Yufei will play compatriot Han Yue for a place in the semi-finals. Han Yue advanced with a 21-11, 21-7 victory over Thailand's Chasinee Korepap.
There was another upset in the women's singles fifth round when fourth seed Natsuki Nidaira of Japan was shown the exit by unseeded Cai Yanyan of China who won 21-11, 21-17 in a 37 minute encounter.
There is still hope for Thailand when No 3 seed Pornpawee Chochuwong brushed aside Leonice Huet of France 21-10, 21-11 and will face Singapore's Yeo Jia Min. The Singaporean tamed Jamie Hsu of the United States 21-13, 21-9 in her quarter-final match.
In the men's singles top seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand will face Korea's Woon Seung-hoon for a place in the last four. The Thai defeated Indonesia's Zulkifli Ramadhini 21-13, 21-14 while the Korean beat Leo Rossi of France 21-8, 21-13 to reach the quarter-finals.
While Kantaphon celebrated there was disappointment for his compatriot and No 3 seed Pachaarapol Nipornram when he was upstaged by Indonesia's No 14 seed Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo. The Indonesian won a 54-minute three-set battle to prevail 13-21, 21-15, 21-15.
Lee Zii Jia kept Malaysia's flag flying when the No 2 seed beat Canada's Jason Anthony Ho-Shue 21-14, 21-13 in 30 minutes, The Malaysian is up against Toma Junior Popov of France, the No 7 seed. The Frenchman took 48 minutes to beat Japan's Kodai Naraoka 21-17, 21-18.
In the men's doubles No 1 seeds Han Chengkai-Zhou Haodong of China romped to a 21-12, 21-14 win over Russia's Rodion Alimov-Pavel Kotsarenko to reach the quarter-finals.
Joining them are compatriots and No 2 seeds He Jiting-Tan Qiang who beat Indonesia's Rizki Adam-Calvin Kristanto 21-17, 21-19 in 33 minutes. Also advancing were Thailand's No 3 seeds Pakin Kuna-Anuvit-Natthapat Trinkajee, 21-16, 21-14 winners over Petr Beran-Jan Louda of the Czech Reoublic.
