Pornpawee Chochuwong's performance drew attention at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2020. She has already won twice in the Group B stage.

Remarkably, the 23-year-old women's singles beat two top players. Tai Tzu Ying, who was defeated 21-17, 21-11 in Bangkok on Thursday (28/1/2021) currently holds the status of world number one.

This victory was an achievement for Chochuwong because in the three meetings she’s had with Tzu Ying, she has never won. This included when the two met at the junior level in 2012. The day before, on Wednesday (27/1/2021), Pornpawee defeated her senior, Rachanok Intanon, 15-21, 21-11, 21-18.

Ratchanok was once ranked number one in the world in 2016. Unfortunately, she was unable to maintain that ranking due to an injury that prevented her from performing at her best.

In the final group match, Pornpawee, who is now ranked 13th in the world, will face a tough opponent. She will go up against the toughness of the Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu. The ability of this 25 year old should not be underestimated. However in this Finals, the chances of qualifying for Sindhu are over because she lost twice, namely to Tzu Ying and Ratchanok.

In 2019 she was a world champion and also a finalist for the 2016 Rio Olympics. In addition, Sindhu has defeated Pornpawee three times in four meetings.

There’s a chance for us to get a surprise of fierce competition in Group B, though. The women's singles from Spain, Carolina Marin and An Se Young from South Korea have both won twice. In the past 2 weeks, Marin was champion in both the Yonex and Toyota Thailand Open, and Se Young has just won twice, against Evgeniya Kosetskaya from Russia and Michelle Li from Canada.

However, when it comes to meetings, Marin is still superior. She has won four times in four meetings. In fact, three of them are in a row.

Pornpawee Chochuwong’s form has been incredible so far. We hope to see her go far in this competition and wish her all the best.
