THE BEST OF ASIA: Busanan ONGBAMRUNGPHAN

Busanan Ongbamrungphan is a Thai Badminton player, who is currently ranked #12 in BWF’S World Ranking for Women’s Singles and has 246 career wins so far.

Born in Bangkok, Thailand, Busanan was first introduced to badminton in 2003, when she was still a young child and wanted to play the sport for fun with her family. This sport that she initially just played for fun, ended up being the career path she has chosen for herself. In 2010 she decided to become professional, and in 2012 she made her international debut winning a stunning gold medal at the Malaysia Masters. What an incredible way to start a career!

The following year, she saw even greater success as she won silver at the 2013 Southeast Asian Games and Asian Youth Games, and bronze at the BWF World Junior Championships. She also won gold at the Dutch Open. 2013 was also the year where she was chosen to be a part of the National Team. An incredible honor for someone so young.

In 2015, she continued to collect more medals by winning gold at the Southeast Asian Games for Women’s Singles and Team, and silver at the Swiss and Bitburger Open. The next year, she won gold at the Indonesian Masters and silver at the Thailand Open, which she repeated in 2017.

She also helped the Thai Women’s Team win bronze at the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia. Even though she’s won a lot more medals than listed, she still has even greater ambitions for the future, as she hopes to one day be a part of the Olympic Games and to hopefully win a medal. We hope she achieves this feat!

Next week, in the first round of the YONEX Thailand Open (12th - 17th January 2021), Busanan will go against Swiss player Sabrina Jaquet in her home country. We wish her all the best in this competition, and future success in her career!
