Badminton Asia first held its continental championships in 1962 and it’s called the Badminton Asia Championship. Since then, it has been held annually since 1991. Initially, the name was Asia Badminton Champions up until 2006. This tournament is hosted by Badminton Asia to recognize the top players in Asia participating in this tournament.

Today, there are three types of continental tournaments in Asia which are Badminton Asia Championship (BAC), Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC), and Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC). At first, only the individual tournaments were held, but in 2016 the team and mixed tournaments were formed.

The Badminton Asia Team Championships were formed to serve as the Asian qualifier for the Thomas & Uber Cup. This tournament is always hosted at the beginning of the year before the Thomas & Uber Cup. Moreover, The BATC tournament is held alternately every year with the BAMTC.

The Badminton Asia Confederation hosted the first BATC in 2016 from February 15 to 21 at the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, India. After that, the BATC is held again in 2018 from 6 to 11 February 2018 at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar, Malaysia. In 2019,  the second edition of the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships was held in Hong Kong. The previous BATC tournament was held in 2020 in Manila, Philippines. The competition consists of 24 teams but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, China and Hong Kong withdrew from the competition. In the men's and women's categories, Indonesia and Japan were the defending champions since 2018.

The upcoming tournament is the 2022 Selangor Badminton Team Championship which is going to be held from February 15 to 20, 2022 at the Setia City Convention Centre in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. This year is the fourth time the BATC is going to be held. This year’s BATC will be participated by 8 countries which are Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. This year's Badminton Asia Team Championships will showcase the top badminton players in Asia, since it will serve as the Asian qualifier for the Thomas & Uber Cup 2022, which will be hosted in Bangkok, Thailand in May 2022. With strict health protocols applied, the biggest badminton team championship in Asia is being hosted again.
